EMU Celebrates World AIDS Day

YPSILANTI – Eastern Michigan University student volunteers have put together a daylong event to mark World AIDS Day Dec. 1.
The day begins with a display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at EMU's Convocation Center. The Quilt is comprised of over 45,000, 3 by 6 foot panels, each one commemorating the life of someone who has died of AIDS. The Quilt offers opportunities for the campus to connect with others who may not be involved in AIDS education, and to connect with people on an emotional rather than intellectual level.
The will be a Live and Let Live question and answer session from 6 to 7:00 p.m. at EMU's Hoyt Conference Center. Two EMU students who work at the HIV/AIDS Resource Center will answer any questions people might ask about the disease and how to prevent it. Then from 7 to 8 p.m. there will be a march from the Hoyt Conference Center to EMUs Walton and Putnam residence halls, in their First Year Center. Participants will march across campus to signify the celebration of life for positive individuals.
The day ends with a performance by the CloseUp Theatre Troupe at 8 p.m. at the First Year Center as they perform "Blackout," their discrimination of HIV/AIDS.
There is an open viewing policy through all of the World AIDS Day events, participants are also allowed to come and go at any time. There is also no charge for admission to any of the sessions. World AIDS Day at EMU is sponsored by University Health Services. For more information, call Elizabeth Davis-Cahimba, Health Education Coordinator at 734-487 2226.
