GLAAD announces nominees for 15th annual GLAAD Media Awards

LOS ANGELES РThe Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation announced the nominees for its 15th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. Among the nominees: HBO's acclaimed film "Angels in America," Bravo's hit reality series "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," ESPN's controversial drama series "Playmakers," Touchstone Pictures' "Under the Tuscan Sun," the award-winning PBS documentary "Brother Outsider," "People en Espa–ol," "Essence Magazine," "The New York Times" and more than 100 other media projects.
GLAAD also announced that it will recognize special honorees Julianne Moore ("Far From Heaven," "The Hours"), Megan Mullally ("Will & Grace"), Cherry Jones ("What Makes a Family"), John Waters ("Hairspray"), Clive Barker ("Sacrament," "Abarat") at Media Awards ceremonies to be held in Los Angeles on March 27, New York on April 12, and in San Francisco on June 5.
The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor the media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBT community.
"Fair, accurate and inclusive media images of our lives and our families have incredible cultural power – and right now those images are more important than ever," said Joan M. Garry, GLAAD's executive director. "This year, audiences saw stories of gay and lesbian families and children in 'Under the Tuscan Sun,' 'Girlfriends' and 'Essence Magazine.' They saw complex, authentic stories about transgender lives in 'Normal' and 'Soldier's Girl.' Time and again, story after story, this year's GLAAD Media Awards nominees made a powerful case for fairness and equality, and it's our privilege to honor them."
This year, GLAAD expects more than 5,000 people to attend the three ceremonies, raising more than $2.5 million for the organization's work. Founded in 1985, GLAAD is the nation's LGBT media advocacy organization, with staff of 41, an annual operating budget of $5.8 million, and offices in Los Angeles and New York.
