A town hall meeting about homophobia in Detroit will take place Wed. Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Charles H. Wright museum of African-American History (315 E. Warren Ave. in Detroit). The event is sponsored by Detroit Black Gay Pride Inc., The Michigan Citizen, and Between The Lines.
The purpose of the event is to bring homophobia out of the closet in the City of Detroit and to create a forum for productive dialogue while building bridges within the community.
The town hall meeting will feature a reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by a panel discussion from 7-9 p.m. moderated by Charles Pugh, WJBK Fox2 Anchor. The panel is scheduled to include CEO/Superintendent of Detroit Public Schools Dr. Kenneth Burnley, Michigan State Senator Hansen Clark, Assistant Chief of Detroit Police Harold Cureton, community youth activist Natasha Jackson, Rev. Darren McCarroll of Unity Fellowship Church in Detroit, Donna Payne of the Human Rights Campaign and the National Black Justice Coalition, Detroit City Council member JoAnn Watson,Executive Director of NAACP Detroit Hester Wheeler, and Rosalyn Worthy, Executive Director of Gospel Against AIDS.
The organizers of this event hope that providing a venue for honest communication is a way to begin addressing issues that affect LGBT people in Detroit as a result of homophobia such as hate crimes, increased suicide and homelessness rates, and oppression.
