It's prom time again at Affirmations

Ferndale – Saturday, May 22 youth from all over the Detroit Metropolitan area will gather in Ferndale for a special Prom Night; one that recognizes and supports all relationships, not just heterosexual ones. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth and their friends will attend this annual tradition, hosted by Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center.
Although some schools are becoming more gay friendly, there are still many out there that specifically prohibit same-sex couples from attending the school's prom. "The high school in Pontiac and other cities still refuse to allow same-sex couples to attend together. That's one of the many reasons why it's so important that we host this annual prom night," says Youth Services Cooridnator Cassandra Varner.
Affirmations has been hosting the prom for over 12 years, since the early 90's. It was one of the first activities coordinated by the young organization's new youth program and is still as popular today as it was then.
