Lesbian Tutor Mattea Roach Starts Week Off with 14 'Jeopardy!' Wins
Mattea Roach, the 23-year-old Toronto-based tutor, has emerged from the shadows of trans “Jeopardy!” Champion Amy Schneider and suddenly found herself in the midst of her own incredible winning streak. Roach, who identifies as lesbian on her Twitter page, starts the week with 14 wins and earnings totaling $320,081. Currently, she sits in eighth place for all-time consecutive games and 10th place on the all-time highest non-tournament cash winnings list.
Roach, originally from the province of Nova Scotia, earned a bachelor's degree in sexual diversity studies and political sciences from the University of Toronto. Earlier, after winning only two shows, she said she’d amassed enough to pay off her college loans. Later, she hinted that she might use her earnings to pay for grad school.
“This has been such a crazy season of streaks,” Roach said in a show-related interview. “I was fully thinking, ‘You know, Amy might still be here. If it’s not Amy, there’s going to be some other super-champion that’s just going to knock me out, game one.’”
“And then, I guess what I didn’t realize is maybe I could become the super champion I wanted to see in the world.”
