LGBT Democrats host anti-bullying action conference

YPSILANTI –
The Michigan Democratic Party's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Allies Caucus will host an anti-bullying action conference on Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Ypsilanti Library.
The free conference, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 5577 Whittaker Road, is about ending bullying against all students.
"My son was bullied when he was a high school student. It hurt him emotionally and academically," Caucus Chair Phil Volk said. "I don't want any other student to have to endure that. Bullying must be stopped."
Speakers at the conference include former state representative Alma Wheeler-Smith, Washtenaw Prosecuting Attorney Brian Mackie, Washtenaw Sheriff Jerry Clayton, Lena Masri from the Council on American-Islamic relations and University of Michigan Student Assembly President Christopher Armstrong.
Armstrong, Phil Volk and U-M College Democrats leader Brendan Campbell are co-chairing the conference.
Among other actions, the caucus wants to see the state legislature pass an enumerated anti-bullying law that protects all students but specifies protection for minority, disabled and LGBT students. Michigan is one of five states without a bullying law.
