LGBT spirituality conference at Affirmations

Ferndale – On Wednesday, Aug. 18, community members come together to denounce that message and encourage LGBT people to reclaim the spirituality within themselves.
Discovering Our Truth: Reclaiming LGBT Spirituality is a 4-hour evening conference designed to assist LGBT people with spiritual development. The Aug. 18 event will include a keynote presentation by Sister Rochelle Harper, breakout sessions on a variety of spiritually-focused topics from "Mystical Traditions of Pagan America" to "The Trans-Gender Christ." The evening will close with a panel discussion and community question-and-answer. The evening's speakers will include Jennifer Adriel, Reverend Mark Bidwell, Stephen Fleck and Joe Kort.
"True spirituality is an authentic sense of deep connection and meaning associated with some thing or things outside of our own selves," said organizer and certified Family Life educator Glenn Derrick. "This sense of connection, which need not be religious at all, helps to fulfill the basic human need to connect to, and give back to, the world in a positive way, even when the world hasn't always dealt positively with us."
The Discovering Our Truth conference is sponsored by Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center, Coventry Creations, Joe Kort and Associates, Metropolitan Community Church of Detroit, the Royal Oak Center for Personal Growth, and Soul Force Detroit. It will take place Wednesday, Aug. 18 from 6-10 p.m. at the Metropolitan Community Church of Detroit (MCCD), located at 2441 Pinecrest in Ferndale. There is no fee to attend this conference.
