Sources told MIRS earlier today, that the House would take up HJR U (click this url to see it: http://198.109.173.11/mileg.asp?page=getObject&objName=2004-HJR-U ) so-called marriage protection resolution on Tuesday.
The resolution would ban the recognition of gay and lesbian marriages by the state and local governmental units. It must receive a two-thirds majority vote of both the House and the Senate to be adopted. If adopted by the Legislature, the resolution would be placed on a statewide ballot, and become law if the voters pass it.
The inside story earlier today was that the House would run HJR U on Tuesday, whether legislative leaders were sure they had enough votes (73) to pass it or not. However, this evening MIRS received information that the vote might be held up, either because legislative leaders believed they might secure key votes by waiting, or because they were taken aback by the level of opposition.
