Michigan's Cool Cities Intro

We combed the state of Michigan for cities that welcome LGBT residents and visitors, and that recognize the value of their LGBT populations for economic and social development. After searching high and low, we found the best cities in Michigan and we have bestowed on them the coveted designation of "Cool City."
Here in this issue of Michigan Pride Source Directory we bring together all the "Cool Cities" – Ann Arbor & Ypsilanti, Birmingham, Detroit, Ferndale, Lansing & East Lansing, Royal Oak and the two newest cities to make the cut, Northville and Plymouth. Each week in Between The Lines we feature one or two of these "Cool Cities," highlighting local events and organizations, and putting a spotlight on the local businesses.
In 2000, for the first time ever, the U.S. Census Bureau counted same-sex couples. In Michigan, 15,368 same-sex couples checked the box on their U.S. Census 2000 form, making Michigan the 13th gayest state in the union. There were LGBT couples in every single one of Michigan's 88 counties.
We analyzed the U.S. Census 2000 data for each "Cool City," and we highlighted some of the city's features that convinced us to give it "Cool" status. As you travel around Michigan, use these "Cool City" pages to find cities, places and businesses that welcome the LGBT community. Be sure to tell them you saw their listing in Pride Source, and you will help to reinforce our power and cohesion as a community that supports each other and our allies.
