WASHINGTON – On May 5, PFLAG dad and Great Lakes Regional Director Mike Neubecker was elected vice president and chair of the PFLAG regional directors council. In his new position Neubecker, who will begin in November, will be a vice president on the organization's Executive Board as well as chair of the regional directors, who oversee and guide the organization's day-to-day field issues.
"We're delighted to have Mike as Chair of PFLAG's Regional Directors Council," said Jody M. Huckaby, executive director of PFLAG. "His amazing work in the Great Lakes Region has included development of grassroots leaders, strengthening chapters, and greater interaction in communities. We're looking forward to him bringing those accomplishments to a larger scale in this important volunteer leadership position."
"I regret having to leave the great lakes region as regional director but look forward to working with the other regional directors across the country to help lead PFLAG as we work towards equality for our LGBT loved ones," said Neubecker, and added that he will be "keeping my eyes open" for candidates to replace him as the Great Lakes regional director. Neubecker's replacement for the regional position will be chosen at PFLAG's tri-regional conference in Chicago in early November.
Before becoming Great Lakes Regional Director, Neubecker co-founded PFLAG-Downriver with his wife Jan and served as the Michigan state chair for five years. He has been a PFLAG dad since 1995, is the author of the 1995 book "Out of the Closet Into Our Hearts," and is an occasional contributor to BTL.
