Shout Out!

DETROIT – The University of Detroit Mercy McNichols Campus Library and Dudley Randall Center for Print Culture are hosting "Shout Out! Young Poets Rising," a spoken word competition being held in honor of Broadside Press's 40-year anniversary. The competition is for 16 to 24-year olds residing or studying in the state of Michigan. First prize is $1,000, second prize is $500, and third prize is $200.
Participant registration runs through Aug. 6, 2005. Contestants may participate as groups or individuals and must perform one poem by a Broadside Press poet and one original poem. Two rounds of competition will be held. For the first round contestants may submit a videotaped performance or audition live. Live auditions will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005. Videotapes should be sent with completed registration and minor release forms and postmarked no later than Aug. 6, 2005.
Based on the first round of competition, eight contestants will be invited to perform in the final round of competition Sept. 10, 2005 on the University of Detroit Mercy McNichols Campus.
The competition will be juried by Broadside Press poets, Metro area creative writers, and UDM faculty. The three winners of the competition will be invited to perform at the Broadside Anniversary Celebration Sept. 24, 2005.
