Creep of the Week: Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kansas)

Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.)

He'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too.
Especially if your dog is gay, an activist judge or, Heaven forbid, both.
Things are going so well for Republicans right now they have nothing more pressing to focus on than "the gay menace." But then, as today's GOP always says: "When the going gets tough the tough… aw hell, who cares what the tough do? Let's drag out the queers."
On Oct. 28 Sen. Sam Brownback, a Kansas Republican, dusted off the Marriage Protection Amendment and announced that the Senate Subcommittee on the Constitution will meet Nov. 2 to vote on sending the measure to the full Senate.
"Just one year ago, the issue of marriage was center stage in the national political debate," Brownback said. "When the people spoke at the voting booth last November, they approved – by decisive majorities – every one of the 11 state amendments protecting traditional marriage."
It's amazing what can happen in a year, isn't it? It's true that a year ago the American people were myopically focused on the issue of "gay marriage." It's also true that a year ago a lot of people voted for George W. Bush who now has dismal approval ratings.
The American people are realizing they were swindled. They were tricked into caring more about two men kissing than terrorism, poverty, health care and the economy. And now, when the Republicans seem to be on a bad luck roll, Brownback is flying the anti-gay flag once again trying to distract from his own party's gross incompetence, corruption and failures.
"Make no mistake: the threat to marriage is imminent and the time to act is now," said Brownback. "The will of the American people is in danger of being thwarted by the will of an unaccountable, activist federal judiciary."
Somebody splash some cold water on Brownback's face and snap him out of jis feverish dream about "activist judges." That nonsense got started when the Massachusetts Supreme Court legalized marriage equality because it happened in a blue state, but recent LGBT victories in the courts have happened in decidedly red states. I find it difficult to believe that left-wing activist judges have somehow managed to infiltrate those courts to issue rulings defending domestic partner benefits (Alaska), striking down discriminatory marriage amendments (Nebraska), and rejecting discriminatory criminal penalties for gay teens (Brownback's own Kansas).
The real "activist judges" are the ones who want to reshape the courts in a right-wing mold. And right now the biggest threat to American families is the possibility of a right-wing judge being confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court. And Brownback couldn't be more thrilled at the possibility.
Contact your Senator and ask them to oppose the Marriage Protection Amendment. And contact Sen. Brownback and remind him that "only the bad witches are ugly." Call him at 202-224-6521 or email him at http://brownback.senate.gov/CMEmailMe.cfm.
