WRAP to honor Dingell, unfairly discharged LGBT vets

ANN ARBOR – The Washtenaw Rainbow Action Project's third annual "Evening of Recognition and Remembrance" will be held on Friday, Nov. 11 at Kerrytown Market and Shops.
This year's event will honor U.S. Congressman John D. Dingell for fifty years of service in the U.S. House of Representatives and his contributions toward protection of the environment and the advancement of civil rights and liberties for all. The evening, in recognition of Veterans' Day, will also salute Michigan service members discharged under "don't ask, don't tell" while serving their country.
As a young Member of Congress, Dingell supported the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and later the more progressive Civil Rights Acts of 1960, which authorized judges to help African-Americans register and vote, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which guaranteed access to public accommodations such as motels and restaurants and authorized the federal government to desegregate public facilities and schools.
Dingell cosponsored the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would make it illegal to discriminate in employment based on real or perceived sexual orientation, and the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which provides federal assistance to state and local jurisdictions to prosecute hate crimes. He was a cosponsor of the Early Treatment for HIV Act, which expands Medicaid to people living with HIV and provides states with the option to cover low-income HIV-infected individuals. He is currently a cosponsor of the Equal Rights Amendment and he voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment.
WRAP's Evening of Recognition and Remembrance will be held Nov. 11 at Kerrytown Market and Shops, 407 North Fourth Avenue (on the second floor) in Ann Arbor. Tickets are $35 per person, $60 per couple, $15 students/limited income; scholarships are available, and additional contributions to WRAP are welcome. A reception will be held from 7-9:30 p.m. with presentations and entertainment starting at 7:45 p.m. Proceeds benefit LGBT programs and services of WRAP Community Center. Reservations requested. For more information or to make reservations contact WRAP at 734-665-5524 or [email protected].
