Affirmations to host fourth annual Health Fair

FERNDALE – On Saturday, April 22 Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community in downtown Ferndale will host the center's fourth annual Health Fair. The region-wide event, sponsored by Project Healthy Living, will give participants the opportunity to receive an array of free or very low cost health services and screening tests. The Health Fair will run from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. and is open to the public.
In addition to the basic health screening tests there will be mental health screening, transgender health tests, glaucoma screening, body mass index, and glucose testing. A number of freebies have been added, too, including water bottles, Frisbees, and an assortment of healthy refreshments. All participants will have a one in five chance of winning a one-month pass to Bally Total Fitness.
"We wanted to put the emphasis on fun and wellness this year, along with the traditional health screenings," said Affirmations' health services coordinator, Deirdre Shires. "Creating a welcoming environment for people to learn more about their health is our main goal."
Although over 75 local sites will participate in Project Healthy Living, Affirmations is the only site that will provide health information specific to LGBT individuals.
A number of community agencies will also be represented at the health fair including TransGender Michigan, UM Comprehensive Gender Services Program, Gilda's Club, HAVEN, the Alzheimer's Association, and Lesbian A-Sisters.
"TransGender Michigan is proud to be a part of this year's Health Fair in order to educate the community about the unique health needs of transgender people," said TransGender Michigan chairperson Carrie Copeland.
