In your editorial piece "Michigan, Detroit should do more" regarding contributions to the Ruth Ellis center, I took particular issue with calling out the City of Detroit for not contributing to the Ruth Ellis center, while wealthier suburbs were given a free pass to not do anything. The City of Detroit hosts more social agencies than any other community in the entire state of Michigan. From homeless centers to mental health this amount of outreach and social services that the City of Detroit hosts and shoulders pales in comparison to what more wealthy and more capable communities are doing.
How much does Ferndale contribute to homeless gay youth? Or what about the more wealthy West Bloomfield or Birmigham? Your article does not call on them to contribute, so why do you feel the need to call out Detroit? Is homeless gay youth only Detroit's problem?
For a city which faces many obstacles including budget shortfalls, a shrinking tax base, homelessness and others, I think it is particularly cruel to expect Detroit to be everything to everyone while West Bloomfield and Birmingham are allowed to do nothing.
