Detroit Woman Sues Dearborn Alleging HIV Discrimination

DETROIT - Shalandra Jones, a 42 year old resident of Detroit, has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Dearborn and one of its police officers alleging discrimination on the basis of her HIV-status. The suit was filed Monday in the Federal District Court Eastern District of Michigan located in Detroit by Detroit Legal Services on behalf of Jones.
The case stems for a 2012 traffic stop in Dearborn. When Dearborn Officer David Lacey discovered Jones' HIV medications in her purse during a search of her car, he became "aggravated" and told her she was being given a criminal appearance ticket because she had not disclosed her status to him when he asked her to step out of the car for the search. The entire episode was caught on dash board camera.
