New Website for Trans Empowerment

By BTL Staff

MICHIGAN – A Michigan group launched a new website last week aimed at helping the transgender community with economic empowerment.
The new website, sponsored by the Michigan Trans Economic Development Initiatives (MITEDI), pronounced "my teddie," hosts a number of helpful tools for the local transgender community and local employers.
MITEDI is an evolving platform that grew out of the grassroots formation of the Michigan Trans/GNC Empowerment Task Force (MTET), which works to identify the needs and concerns of transgender people of color in their own words while also empowering trans persons.
The site is divided into four developmental areas: it serves as an informational portal, promotes services by and for trans people with economic needs, maintains a platform for empowering grassroots economic development initiatives starting in Metro Detroit and is a space to promote trans peoples' earned income enterprises in a shared space.
Resources on the website are not just geared towards those within the transgender community, but also have references and training materials for employers. Jen Durr Services LLC provides a few "courses" for employers to obtain and read so that they can make their workspace more trans-inclusive and accepting.
Catered to a three-legged approach, MITEDI combines self-interest in career progression, pro-social community building and compliance of more trans responsive needs and value contributions. The site will help trans income seekers find and maintain income opportunities within a year and help to reduce the unemployment rate of the Michigan trans community within two years.
MITEDI offers users the chance to explore freelance income opportunities, promote their enterprises, start trans friendly businesses, find trans friendly jobs or propose empowerment initiatives at work.
"It's really trying to increase economic employment options for trans individuals and it is a wonderful idea," Rachel Crandall, executive director of Transgender Michigan, said.
