Creep of the Week: Rep. Sally Kern

Poor Sally Kern (R-Okalahoma). Ever since she said that gays were a bigger threat to this country than terrorism she's been under "tremendous assault" by "homosexual anti-Christian hate groups." Well, according to Concerned Women for America's Matt Barber anyway. And he would know.
Thankfully Kern has a lot of supporters. In fact, over 1,000 of her friends rallied at the Oklahoma capitol to support her on April 2, apparently not realizing that April Fools Day was actually the day before.
Why Kern's become a veritable poster child of Christ for free Christian speech, which, of course, includes bat shit crazy diatribes about gays recruiting two-year-olds and "infiltrating" city-councils in order to promote the oft-referred to but never defined "homosexual agenda."
Reaction to her anti-gay speech, widely publicized by the Victory Fund and posted on YouTube, was swift. Kern says she received thousands of angry messages from gay supporters.
"I've been called lots of names, and I can't repeat most of those names," Kern said at the April 2 rally, according to The Oklahoman. "Some of the good names I've been called have been courageous, brave and a hero. And I want you to know – and I mean this with all my heart – I have more trouble relating to those good names than I do the bad names. I say that because I know I'm a sinner and I'm not worthy of God's grace."
The humble Kern, who has refused to apologize for her comments, also said, "This is not about me. It's about the church having the right to speak out about the redeeming love of Jesus Christ who died to set us all free from our sins. The Lord gave me a verse I've been claiming. Philippians 1:12, 'I want you to know that what has happened to me has really served to advance the Gospel.'"
Matt Barber, CWA's Policy Director for Cultural Issues, said after the rally, "This astronomical show of support for Rep. Sally Kern today sends a strong message. People with traditional values who value God's design for human sexuality will not be intimidated and bullied into silence. Political correctness can never trump truth. Sally Kern stood for truth and she was hated for it. She was persecuted for Christ, but the Body of Christ was there to lift her up. Sally was faithful to God and He was faithful to her in return. This is a great day for all who love righteousness."
Not so much a day for all who love tolerance, but hey, tolerance is just another word for nothing left to lose. Or was that freedom?
Besides, gays aren't even really upset by her comments. "Really [it's] a ploy to try to intimidate Representative Kern in particular, and the state legislature in Oklahoma in general, to try to get these laws passed that favor them and end up criminalizing Christianity," says Thomas More Law Center attorney Brian Rooney.
Not that Kern has anything to worry about. The Thomas More Law Center is now representing her should those evil gays who are so intolerant of her intolerance try anything funny.
