MAC needs more members

The Multicultural Advisory Committee of the Affirmations LGBT community center has announced that it is looking to recruit new members. Specifically, the group is looking for individuals with a passion for diversity and inclusion looking to help create a framework for those goals within the center.
Interested persons must be able to commit at least four hours of time per month, including meetings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on the first and third Thursday of each month. They must also be willing to complete research-based homework assignments and sub-committee participated on a voluntary and as-needed basis.
The Multicultural Advisory Committee held its first meeting in May of 2008. Since then, the group has aired concerns about racism in the community, participated in the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion's intensive diversity training and strategic planning sessions and begun working through the Denver Foundation's Inclusiveness Project to guide their work in creating a blueprint for change at Affirmations.
They also held an open house on Sept. 19, where they shared their progress with community members. The evening was hosted at Affirmations, and included a welcoming meet-and-greet and was followed by a one-hour presentation reviewing the historical context that created the MAC, the present work being conducted and the future expectations. Follow-up dialogue pointed to a need for the Multicultural Advisory Committee to continue to communicate its progress to the community at large.
The MAC is currently working on collecting demographic information about the region, collecting program and service information from area nonprofits and conducting an in-depth analysis of Affirmations' policies and practices.
The MAC meets monthly at Affirmations and includes Pamela Alexander, Michelle Anderson, Nkosi Figueroa, Tamara Halliburton, Torii Hamilton, Zip Johnson, Reynaldo Magdaleno, Ryan Oliver, Michelle Walters and Walter Washington.
Individuals interested in applying should call 248-398-7105 and ask for Kathleen LaTosch, or send an e-mail to [email protected].
