Creep of the Week: Michael Heath

Profits are for the righteous. Solvency is decided by God, a.k.a. The Christian Master of the Financial Universe.
Just ask Christian Civil League of Maine Executive Director Michael Heath. In a Sept. 25 post to his blog titled, "The nation will right itself if it fixes sex," Heath thoughtfully reflects on the country's current financial crisis.
"Ruth Graham told her husband Billy years ago that God would have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah if He doesn't judge America," Heath writes. "They were reflecting on a list of sinful conditions existing in our nation in the 1960s. Things have only deteriorated since then."
He continues, "I am not saying I know whether this financial crisis is God's judgment or not. It is not for me to know that definitively."
And what does Mr. Heath suggest we do to fix this mess we're in?
"If Maine's politicians really want to get serious about making Maine strong in light of this national crisis they will do the following immediately," he writes. First we need to stop abortion and then we need to stop the gays.
Heath has a long history of anti-gay crusading. In a March 29 opinion piece Heath wrote, "Everyone has the right to marry already. Nobody should have legal rights that are premised on being sexually promiscuous! NO SPECIAL RIGHTS FOR HOMOSEXUALITY! PERIOD!!"
The "To Do" list posted on his blog includes, "Amend Maine's Constitution to define Marriage" and "Eliminate domestic partnerships and ignore pleas to create civil unions."
"If we did that in 2009 I think God would crack a smile," Heath writes.
Yes, as opposed to the stock market pummeling frown God is currently wearing. It's as if God is saying, "First I make 9/11 happen, then I send Hurricane Katrina, and now Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have glossy spreads of their wedding photos in People magazine! What on earth do I have to do to get your attention?"
Apparently God has finally realized what Americans really care about: money. And the only way out of this pickle is to listen to folks like Heath through which God sends his anti-gay messages.
This is a man who, in 2005, said that if Maine passed a gay rights bill that "we have to throw the Bible away." Heath told Down East Magazine, "The reinterpretation of the Bible would be so radical that there wouldn't be much left of it."
Where homosexuality lurks, danger is not far behind. "What's at the heart of what's being pushed here in this anti-discrimination bill is the idea that all sex is good sex as long as it's consensual," Heath said, "and that one's sexual orientation is something you can't help. I think that's a very dangerous idea."
Almost as dangerous as blaming the economy's crash on gay and lesbian families who are hurting just as much as any other family.
"The culture war and sexuality are organically connected," Heath said. So, apparently, are the economy and sexuality. After all, no matter what happens, a lot of us are going to get screwed.
