Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan Endorse Dana Nessel for Michigan Attorney General

Lansing, Mich. — Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan (PPAM) today announced its endorsement of Dana Nessel for Michigan Attorney General. Nessel, a noted civil rights attorney and former Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor, has worked "tirelessly to protect "the people who need it most over her 25-year legal career," said PPAM.
"We've weathered some brutal attacks on women's access to vital reproductive health care over the past few years, and it's time Michigan's women and families had an Attorney General who used their power to protect our rights instead of chipping away at them," said PPAM President and CEO Lori Carpentier. "Dana Nessel has spent her entire career fighting – and winning – on behalf of the people who need it most. The people of Michigan need Dana in office, fighting for us, and that's why we are thrilled to endorse her."
Perhaps Nessel's most noted case is that of a same-sex couple who wanted to adopt their foster children. That case, DeBoer v. Snyder, successfully overturned Michigan's ban on gay adoption and was consolidated into the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.
"For far too long, the people of Michigan haven't had an Attorney General on their side," Nessel said. "Bill Schuette has spent his time as AG using the power of his office to undermine women's constitutionally protected right to access safe, legal abortion, and to restrict access to basic health care for thousands of Michiganders. It is my honor to accept the endorsement of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, and with it the responsibility of protecting all Michiganders from harm."
PPAM is the advocacy arm of Planned Parenthood of Michigan. PPAM works in conjunction with Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood Action Fund at the national level, as well as our health center/education affiliate Planned Parenthood of Michigan, supporters and patients at the state level to ensure access to reproductive health for all Michiganders.
