Reality check for gay Republicans

Dear BTL,
Last week was a harsh reality for "gay Republicans" out there who helped elect this president who ran on a campaign promise to support an amendment to our constitution that will ban same-sex marriage. How do you feel about your party today as they cave in to the religious right's agenda to make scapegoats of our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters? How do you feel about George W. Bush (who received your vote) going down in history as the first president who is determined to write discrimination into our precious Constitution?
The vast majority of the gay community you identify with is very disappointed with you. Even though your numbers are small, we are aware you exist — from Marquette to Bangor Michigan, you are scattered here and there like thorns on a long-stemmed rose. You are somewhat of an embarrassment to the gay community, and an oxymoron according to some. We are hopeful, however, that one day you will emerge from the darkness and become more enlightened.
But don't expect us to be holding our breath. We will be sure to leave the light on for you whenever you decide to come back to reality.
J. Dietrich,
Saugatuck
