Log Cabin Republicans Make It Official: They Hate Trans People
The Log Cabin Republicans is an absolutely worthless organization. Actually, they’re worse than worthless because they gleefully help to advance the Republican anti-queer agenda.
So of course they’re anti-trans now.
In an Aug. 20 piece published on Town Hall, LCR President Ross Hemminger writes, “In 2015, the Log Cabin Republicans Board of Directors voted to add the ‘T’ under the umbrella of our mission — out of a belief that all adults should be allowed to pursue their own happiness, free of government interference, as long as it did not impede on the inalienable rights of others.”
Now, I didn’t realize that it took until 2015 for LCR to recognize transgender people as worth protecting. But better late than never I guess?
Haha, just kidding. LCR has given up on transgender people.
“[In 2015], we did not believe that we would find ourselves where we are today,” Hemminger writes. The transgender movement has ceased focusing on adults at all — nearly all of their efforts and those of their aligned special interest groups focus on minors.”
Yes, a lot of transgender advocacy focuses on minors. But that’s because conservatives have targeted trans kids. For years they have been fighting against trans kids using bathrooms and locker rooms, playing sports, and using preferred names and pronouns. They’ve deemed any acceptance of trans kids by parents or educators to be child abuse and have told outrageous lies about gender-affirming care.
And Hemminger echoes all of it. His opinion piece reads like a Trump executive order complete with references to “radical gender ideology” and “men in women’s sports” and “gender reassignment” that is “irreversible” happening “without the knowledge or consent of the parents.”
It’s all bullshit. Respecting the humanity of transgender people is not “radical ideology.” The obsession with keeping trans girls out is making sports less safe and welcoming for the girls Republicans claim they want to protect. And gender-affirming care is not some brand new area of medicine where unethical doctors hack away at kids’ bodies and/or pump them full of hormones for the fun of it behind parents’ backs. Most people report positive long-term outcomes.
Hemminger doesn’t see — or chooses to ignore — the fact that the very people who are anti-trans are by and large anti-LGB, too. The same arguments that were made against marriage equality (“it’s unnatural,” “think of the children,” “homosexuality can be cured”) are being used against transgender people.
“We have come a long way,” Hemminger continues. “We have fought for the right to legally marry who we love, serve our country and our communities openly and proudly, and to enjoy the same inalienable rights afforded to all law-abiding Americans — and we succeeded.”
Succeeded? MFer, the majority of the Supreme Court wants to overturn the marriage equality decision. Civil rights are never just won and done. They have to be continuously fought for because there is always someone who wants to take them away. In fact, the Republican Party has made rolling back civil rights their whole personality.
Speaking of successes, remember when transgender people won the right to serve in the military? Trump threw that right in the trash. So get out of here with your “success.”
“Gay men and women are losing public support across the country, and support for gay marriage and other once-widely accepted rights is eroding,” writes Hemminger. “Why? Because many voters today weren’t alive or cognizant of the politics of gay marriage winding its way through the courts and gaining ground in public opinion. Their view of the gay community is based on today’s radical transgender activists with their unnecessary and discomfiting focus on America’s youth.”
Now what in the actual fuck? Leading up to 2015, the subject of “gay marriage” was covered extensively by the media. Sure, some people weren’t paying attention, but it wasn’t some secret thing happening off the grid. Also, people who “weren’t alive” in 2015 have lived their entire lives in a country with marriage equality.
Public opinion of LGB people is dropping, but that’s not because of trans people. It’s because Republicans have made trans people public enemies and the media has largely accepted this framing. Yes, trans people, especially trans kids, are in the spotlight right now. Because Republicans want it that way and Democrats have done little to nothing to push back.
Hemminger doesn’t see — or chooses to ignore — the fact that the very people who are anti-trans are by and large anti-LGB, too. The same arguments that were made against marriage equality (“it’s unnatural,” “think of the children,” “homosexuality can be cured”) are being used against transgender people.
The fact that LCR called Donald Trump “perhaps the most pro-LGBT presidential nominee in the history of the Republican Party” in 2016 and then enthusiastically supported him in 2020 and 2024 tells you just about everything you need to know.
LCR is disconnected from reality. They think they can have their conservative cake and eat it, too. As if they aren’t supporting the very people who would use “religious liberty” to deny them that cake in the first place.
