Michigan Rep. Josh Schriver to Introduce Resolution Urging Supreme Court to Overturn Same-Sex Marriage

Update: After Rep. Schriver's press conference, he abruptly left without taking questions. Instead, Michigan Sen. Jeremy Moss took the podium to deliver a stinging rebuttal. Read our coverage here.
Rep. Josh Schriver (R-Oxford) plans to introduce a resolution urging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.
In a statement from his office, Schriver said the decision is “at odds with the sanctity of marriage, the Michigan Constitution and the principles upon which the country was established.”
In December 2024, Schriver posted to X that gay marriage should be made “illegal again.” Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel responded to the post, writing, “Please explain how dissolving my marriage, or that of the hundreds of thousands of other same-sex couples living in America, provides a benefit to your constituents or anyone else. You’re not interested in helping Michiganders. You want only to hurt those you hate. Shame on you.”
Schriver has previously drawn criticism for his votes on marriage-related legislation in Michigan. In 2023, he voted against bills aimed at banning child marriage and closing a marital rape loophole.
Schriver plans to introduce the resolution Tuesday, Feb. 25, following a House session at 1:30 p.m. Twelve Republican representatives back Rep. Josh Schriver’s resolution.
